Mistaken Identity Leads To False Murder Conviction

The Thomas R. James Story

By Thomas R. James

Is it possible that having the same first and last name as a person who participated in a murder cause you to spend the rest of your life in prison? The answer is yes - and I am living proof.
I am Thomas Raynard James better known as “Jay.” I am serving a life sentence for armed robbery, first degree murder, armed burglary, and aggravated assault. However I had nothing to do with those crimes. I was charged, tried and convicted of them because I have the same name as the man identified as the perpetrator - Thomas James.

Our Mission

It is the mission of Thomas James Defense Fund to acquire sufficient funding through donations to obtain the legal assistance and resources necessary to prove that Mr. James, as well as others, is innocent but incarcerated.

The reason for the founding of this defense fund is (1) to make society at large aware of the many people like Mr. James that have been charged, tried and wrongly convicted for crimes not committed by them, which were not "high profile"; that had no DNA evidence and did not receive the death penalty. It is the contention of the IBI that without at least one of the aforementioned trilogies, no one knows or seems to want to know of the circumstances that led to their unjust incarceration. (2) To provide them a forum in which they can finally cry out and not have their cries fall on deaf ears.  The IBI is presently endeavoring to function in conjunction with various lawyers, organizations and universities that are adversaries of wrongful convictions.
